PRODUCTION - Character Analysis
As our film is about Serial Killers on a date I decided to go and do some research about the particular traits and clothing of Serial Killers that may be distinctive and make them stand out from others. There seems to be 5 main traits that some of the Worlds most notorious murderers have in common that have been analysed by criminologists and psychologists.
1 - POWER JUNKIE
1 - POWER JUNKIE
Serial Killers usually have an affinity with POWER even when they have been caught and know that the chase is over. They are intent on exerting some sort of control over the people around them and they often hold back pieces of crutial information to gain attention and assert a warped sense of authority.
Ian Brady (who was convicted of killing 5 children with accomplice Myra Hindley) withheld the location of a victim's body from the Police which many believe was an attempt to assert power and control over the investigation.
2 - MANIPLUATOR
Noticable vulnerability and the need to constantly please have been effectively used time and time again by Serial Killers as a way of hiding their dark, sinister personality. Some of the World's best have an unbelievable ability to manipulate those around them by "pressing the right buttons" to make it look like they are in the wrong or not at fault. Serial Killers are often able manipluate situations in order to shift the blame onto someone else by using medical psychological research to explain their actions. Doctor Harold Shipman used his position as a medical expert to manipulate his patients into treatments that resulted in him killing them while posing as a caring member of society.
3 - AN EGOTISTICAL BRAGGER
Egotistical Serial Killers often are unable to help but brag about the atrocities that they have committed, whether it's aimed at their accomplices or their next victim or even law enforcement. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley revisited the burial sites often , taking "ghoulish trophy shots" of the unhabited landscape as a memento of their terrifying crimes. Another example was the Beast of Manchester, Trevor Hardy , who bragged about one of the murders to his younger sibling which ultimately resulted in his arrest.
4 - A SUPERFICIAL CHARMER
Serial Killers often have a good grasp of other people's emotions and are quick to sense any vulnerability or weakness in order to worm their way in and convince them into doing things they wouldn't normally do. They will get others onto their side and then and take charge of a situation with a perfect combination of compliments and common sense. An example of this is Ted Bundy. Shortly before he was executed in 1989, Ted Bundy confessed to 30 murders in 7 of the States in America. He raped and kidnapped women after gaining their trust after working his charm and faked having disabilities and injuries or being an authoritative figure like a policeman.
5 - AN AVERAGE JOE
Possibly, the most scary trait of a Serial Killer is how they can just seem like a normal pillar of the community at first sight. They view it as a way of gaining the trust of the community to only go and abuse it in the most horrendous way. This tactical move has enabled many Killers to get away with many perverted crimes behind closed doors. An example of this is Fred and Rose West from Gloucester, UK. The pair tortured and raped young women and girls and killed at least 12 including their own family members and even buried some of them in their garden. In the USA, John Wayne Gacy was politically active in his suburb in Chicago and worked hard for the local community however, in private he murdered teenage boys and buried their remains on the grounds of his house.

There are 2 main types of Serial Killers, organised and disorganised.
