THEORY - Representation in our film "The Secret"

Representation refers to the construction of any medium of aspects of reality such as people, places, events etc. Our film "The Secret" is based around a real story however we put our own twist on it making it more fictional. We tried to make our film appealing to as many social groups as we could like age, gender, sexuality.  Theorist Judith Butler created a theory - 'Queer Theory'. Her theory generates the idea that gender doesn't control all aspects of our identity or our perception of others. Gender is flexible in the way it is represented whether it is in Television or in film. This applies to our film in the sense of erasing the negativity associated with homosexuality. We applied the theory with the intention to help our audience be more open to homosexuality and with how more common this theme is in every day life. By talking about the topic so openly and using a stereotypical teenage setting it helps normalise the topic to those who might not be so open ...

REPRESENTATION  Representation refers to the construction in any medium of aspects of 'reality' such as people, places, objects, events,  cultural identities and other concepts. Feature films and Documentaries tell us stories about ourselves and the world around us. Television speaks back to us and offers us a form of reality. Print journalism turns daily life into a story and advertisements narrate our fantasies and desires.  ...

THEORY - Genre Theory

GENRE THEORY GENRE - A  class or category of artistic endeavour having a particular form, context, technique. Genre is a way of categorising a text through style and form. it is vital to be able to categorise text like this - both from the perspective of production and analysis.  A text is classified in a genre through the identification of key elements which occur in that text and in others of the same genre. These elements may be referred to as paradigms and range from costume, music, plot and font. Audiences recognises these  paradigms   and bring a set of expectations to their reading of the text. For example - the criminal will be brought to justice at the end of the police thriller.  These paradigms may be grouped into those relating to: iconography - the main signs and symbols that you see/hear structure - the way a text is put together and the shape it takes theme - issues and the ideas it deals with Genre is important for both...
