PRODUCTION - Film Ideas and Inspiration
This year, for our Year 14 project, we have been given the task to product a 5 minute Short Film. For Our Year 13 film, we had chosen the very controversial topic of homosexuality and combined it with the teenage audience we had aimed our film for to create "The Secret." This year we decided to look at other big topics to see what we could use as inspiration. A massive topic all over the news at the minute is Gun Violence, Gun Laws and Mass shootings in America. We all came to a mutual agreement about this largely talked about topic and decided to develop on this topic.
Stemming from the idea of murder/shootings, we explored the areas in which we could incorporate this into our production. The first thing we thought about was school shootings however we decided that it may be too difficult to do in the end in terms of writing a script and finding a location etc. We then did more research into different stories and newspaper articles about Serial Killers from the UK and America. I did a lot of research on Serial Killers from Ireland and the UK and was gobsmacked at the information I was able to find.
A few of the names that I did research on are listed below.
Robert Black Peter Sutcliffe
Rose West Levi Bellfield
Anthony Hardy Stephen Port
Over the weekend, I watched a film called "What We Do In The Shadows" which is a mockumentary horror comedy film about a group of vampires that live together in Wellington, New Zealand. The vampire's are discovering how difficult it is to life a modern life and doing the every day activities like renting a flat and going out to nightclubs. This film takes the twist of a horror film and combines it with a comedy to create a more lighthearted vibe for the audience. I think that it would be good to incorporate a comedic aspect to our film so that it lightens the atmosphere as well as lessening the seriousness of the topic.

I personally feel that this particular genre has a lot of space to play with in respect to the topic of Serial Killers in a comedic/mockumentary setting. I feel like this unique topic would drag in a wide range of audiences as there aren't many comedy takes on Serial Killers or Murderers. After all the research I have done on these people and this general subject matter has greatly widened my interest and curiosity and so I think this idea would be really interesting to take forward onto production.
