PRODUCTION - Making the Poster and changing the End Title Font
Today, Andrea and Eimir started editing the poster. I was not present during this however I asked Andrea to fill me in on everything they did while I was absent so I was on the same page as them when I was back in class.
Andrea told me that they had done some research on ransom letters and notes and liked the idea of the cut up letters so looked for some fonts that followed similarities to this idea. They used a website called 1001 fonts which offered lots and lots of options for fonts. The girls had a look at some ideas and asked me for my opinion on which one and we all had a mutual agreement on one called "Got Heroin". We wanted our end title screen to be black however this font only came in black with a white background which meant we had to find a way to invert the colours. They had to use a website called Pine Tools to help do this.
When we were happy with the way the text looked, we thought that we should probably change the text in the film to match the poster to keep continuity throughout. This resulted in changing the closing credits text to match the text on the poster and following the black and white colour scheme also.
During the actual shooting of the poster, I was present and had a lot of fun with Eimir and Andrea trying out different ways to make the idea work. Andrea had the idea of combining the aspect of romance and death and using a real lamb's heart as our main aspect on the poster. We were able to do this by asking the Biology Department in school if we could use a heart and Andrea's dad was able to contact a butcher and get us a bag of blood as well as some scrap pieces of liver in case the heart didn't work particularly well. Eimir brought a plate, knife and fork in from home so we had the same cutlery from the dinner scene which kept the continuity. We took lots of different shots, using artificial lighting from our iPhones and also some with the knife going diagonally through the heart as a play on the prop we have in our interview scene.
We wanted to make sure our poster followed suit with other mockumentary posters that have the main character or something obvious from the film demonstrated in the poster. This is why we wanted the raw, bloody heart in the centre of our poster as it was a major hint as to the plot of our film without giving too much away. To maintain continuity throughout the film and the poster, we stuck to a red/black/grey colour scheme that was used throughout our film in respect to costumes and lighting.
When we were happy with the general layout of the poster, we edited the colours slightly by changing the saturation brightness and warmth of the images by using FaceTune that Eimir had available on her iPhone. Once we were happy with the editing of the poster, it was time to start adding all the extras like the title and all the credits for cast and crew. We added the actors names above the title as they are the main characters in the film and used a heart icon to separate their names which reiterates the aspect of romance.
In the bottom third of the poster, we have the crew credits. As these also feature at the end of our film we knew what we should include or what was relevant and what wasn't. All the significant words like the crew names are in a larger font size so it catches the audiences eye a lot better and this is inspiration that was taken from other posters as it is a common theme throughout many film posters.
We also thought it would be a nice touch to add some social media links and also the release date at the bottom of the poster to make the audience more aware and allow us to promote the film more - especially because Social Media is the way forward at this moment in time.
This is our finished poster.
